Background:

Jacqueline Marie Stiles was born in Kansas City, Kansas. Jackie grew up in Claflin Kansas and attended Claflin High School. JackieÕs athletic accomplishments are numerous and diverse but she is known best for her endeavors on the basketball court. By the end of her senior year she became the leading scorer for boys and girls in Kansas High School history. Jackie is the state record holder with 71 points in one game. During her four years of high school she won a state record 14 gold medals in track, including the first to win the 400, 800, 1600 and 3200 meters in one day. She placed in the top three in state cross country all four years. This well rounded athlete also played tennis for the Claflin Wildcats and placed 2nd in state all three seasons.

At Missouri State, she was known for her spinning jump shots, driving lay ups and 3-pointers. She is the all time leading scorer in NCAA division one basketball history with 3,393 points. She had a compelling competitive spirit and stop-on-a-dime quickness. What she brought to the court was incredible jump shots and moves that defied defenses designed specifically to stop her. Her career at MSU culminated in the 2001 NCAA Tournament where she led the Lady Bears to a final four appearance. In the sweet-sixteen game she scored 41 points in an 81 - 71 shocker against top-ranked Duke. Jackie remains the only woman to score more than 1,000 points in a single season. In her college career she procured a number of outstanding awards including: Three time Missouri Valley Player of the year, won the Wade Trophy for best female basketball player in the nation, and the Broderick cup for college women athlete of the year in 2001.Verizon Academic All American 1st team and the Kodak 1st team All American.

In the 2001 WNBA draft she was picked fourth by the Portland Fire. She captured the rookie of the year title that summer with a scoring average of 14.9 points. She was named to the 2001 WNBA All-Star team and was picked WNBA Player of the week averaging 22 points on 54% shooting. In 2002 she scored a season high 18 points for the Los Angeles Sparks.

Jackie played briefly in the Australian league before retiring in 2006 due to injuries incurred from her legendary training regimen. JUDY JOHNSTON, MS, RD, LD

Background:

Judy A. Johnston is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian with more than 20 years experience in management and clinical hospital dietetics, specializing in Diabetes management. In 1990, she joined the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) with a grant from the Kansas Health Foundation through which she created Kansas Leadership to Encourage Activity and Nutrition (LEAN), Ms. Johnston became nationally recognized for innovation in nutrition out of the 5-A-Day For Better Health program, community development, school-based wellness programming, program evaluation and community leadership. She is the author of a number of articles and book chapters on these topics, as well as a nutrition and physical activity board game, "Jack Sprat's Table".

In 1999, Ms. Johnston moved to Kansas State University, where she was an Extension Specialist in the Community Health Institute and Co-Principal Investigator on an NIH-funded R-01 research grant as part of the NIH Behavior Change Consortium. At the same time, she moved her office to the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the University of Kansas School of Medicine (Wichita) where she was a Teaching Associate.

In September 2003, Ms. Johnston joined the faculty at the University of Kansas School of Medicine (Wichita) as a Research Instructor in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health. She continues her grant-funded research in health ministry in faith communities, leadership, oral health, cancer prevention and survivorship, nutrition, and physical activity while teaching in the MPH Program. In 2009 she was named Program Director and part of the development team for the KUSM-W Breast Cancer Survivorship Center in Wichita. Judy is a Kansas Health Foundation Leadership Fellow, a Kansas Public Health Leadership Fellow, and faculty for the Kansas Leadership Center.

Judy is a 14-year breast cancer survivor. She and her husband Bill celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary in September 2009. They are the proud parents of one daughter, Lori, who lives three blocks from them with her husband, Greg, and their beautiful daughters, Chelsey (age 4) and Audrey (age 2).



DR. MARY BETH MILLER, MD
CHIEF OF STAFF
CHEYENNE COUNTY HOSPITAL

Background:

Dr. Mary Beth Miller is the current chief of staff at Cheyenne County Hospital in Saint Francis, Kansas.

She attended medical school at the University of Kansas, where she was involved with the Pathology Honor Society and the Family Medicine Interest Group. As a resident, she was the Residency Representative and member of the Legislative Affairs Committee for the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors.

Dr. Miller is currently on the Board of Directors for the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians and is the Co-Chair for the KAFP Legislative Committee.

She has given numerous presentations on breast cancer prevention and is personally a breast cancer survivor. She is married with three children.

THERESA BECKER
LAWRENCE, KS
UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS

Background:

Theresa Becker was named Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance at the University of Kansas in November 2005. She joined KU from the University of Nebraska athletics department, where she had served as Assistant Director of Compliance since 1997. At Nebraska, Becker coordinated a comprehensive NCAA rules and compliance education program, which included the development and maintenance of an athletic compliance monitoring system She developed and maintained an athletic compliance policy and procedures manual, and provided interpretative support regarding NCAA, Big 12 Conference and institutional rules and regulations.

Becker coordinated and conducted compliance review and eligibility certification meetings for student-athletes and practice players, and prepared rules-infraction reports to the NCAA and Big 12 Conference. In addition, she prepared NCAA and Big 12 Conference appeals and waivers, coordinated the administration of the NCAA Coaches Certification Exam and edited and distributed various athletics compliance-related publications.

Becker participated in NCAA Regional Rules Seminars and Big 12 Conference Compliance meetings, and coordinated the on-campus Big 12 Conference-administered Compliance Review at Nebraska.

Becker has also served as the Associate Head Women's Basketball Coach at Nebraska. She was head women's basketball coach at Iowa State University from 1992-95.

Becker also served as Head Softball Coach at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., immediately after graduating from Southeast Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in education.

BRENDA VANLENGEN
SPORTS BROADCASTER

Background:

Brenda VanLengen has spent her career championing the importance of education, fitness and sports. Over the past ten years, Brenda VanLengen, helped build PE4life, a national non-profit organization dedicated to developing a country of active and healthy children and youth by increasing access to quality physical education. VanLengen is responsible for the development of key PE4life programs and projects, including the nationally acclaimed PE4life Academies that serve as model school-based physical education programs. To date, PE4life program services have reached over 3,000 educational leaders from 39 states across the country, impacting 2,855 schools and over 2.2 million children.

In addition, VanLengen is recognized as one of the top women’s sports broadcasters in the country. She has called NCAA Tournament games on ESPN since 1999 and announced the NCAA Division II National Championship for six years. This season, she begins her 14th season as broadcaster for Big 12 Conference Women’s Basketball on Fox Sports Net and hosts a national women’s sports talk show every Monday and Friday on SportsRadioKC.com.

Recipient of the “Distinguished Alumni Award” from the University of Nebraska-Kearney in 2008, VanLengen graduated summa cum laude and earned Academic All-American honors twice in basketball at Kearney and served as an Assistant Coach for the University of Nebraska from 1990-95. In 1998, she was the Executive Director of the 1998 NCAA Women’s Final Four.
